John’s Predictions for Business Travel in 2026

News & views across travel

As we look ahead to 2026, John Stephenson, Managing Director at YTC, is more optimistic than ever about the transformation ahead for business travel.

The shifts we began forecasting last year – increased automation, smarter tools and deeper sustainability – are now accelerating. Here’s how I believe the landscape of corporate travel, SME business travel and the role of business travel agents will evolve over the next 12–18 months.

1. Booking and Management – Even Smarter, Even Faster

Over the last 18 months at Your Travel Corporate (YTC), we’ve moved beyond fragmented systems and manual processes. We centralised flight, hotel, rail, and ground-transport bookings into an integrated platform – giving our travel experts the bandwidth to focus on value-adding support rather than just process.

In 2026, I expect this shift toward automation and integrated workflows to become widespread across the corporate travel industry. Businesses – particularly small and medium enterprises – increasingly demand a one-stop booking and management solution. They’ll opt for travel programmes that deliver instant itineraries, rapid changes, and real-time updates.

As this trend grows, SMEs that previously treated corporate travel as a back-office admin headache will lean on business travel agents to deliver both speed and reliability. For agencies willing to evolve, that’s a huge opportunity.

2. Real-Time Intelligence, Compliance & Control

Another major trend is real-time visibility into travel spend, duty-of-care, and compliance. We built dashboards so that travel managers can monitor bookings, traveller status, spending and policy adherence.

In 2026, expect those dashboards to get even more powerful. Travel programmes will include predictive spend forecasting, AI-powered insights on travel patterns, and instant alerts when plans change. For SMEs, that means better cost control and governance – without heavy admin overhead.

From YTC’s perspective as a business travel agent, that deep insight gives us an edge: we are more than just booking agents – we are trusted advisers helping clients keep travel efficient, compliant and cost-effective.

3. The Hybrid Model: Tech + Human Expertise Wins Out

Technology will continue to automate bookings, but I firmly believe human expertise remains irreplaceable – especially for complex itineraries, late-notice changes, or disruption support. At YTC, we champion a hybrid approach: self-service for routine trips, human-led support where it counts. And crucially, being able to connect your designated travel expert who knows your preferences and your business inside out.

In 2026, that hybrid model will be the standard. Businesses will expect a seamless self-serve booking experience – but with a human safety net for the messy, unpredictable parts of corporate travel. For SMEs that don’t have in-house travel teams, that’s where agents add real value.

4. Sustainability and Responsible Travel Become Non-Negotiable

As ESG and sustainability move from optional to expected, business travel will face increasing pressure to minimise environmental impact. At YTC, our “We Care” ethos already emphasises carbon-footprint calculations, eco-friendly travel options, and transparent reporting.

By 2026, I predict that sustainable travel won’t be a “nice to have” – it will be a requirement. Companies across all sizes will demand net-zero strategies, carbon tracking and greener travel options. Business travel agents that embed sustainability in their proposition will stand out as leaders.

5. Corporate Travel & SME Business Travel: Converging Expectations

Historically corporate travel has been associated with large enterprises, while SMEs scrambled along with inefficient, manual processes. But by 2026, the gap will narrow. As technology lowers costs and simplifies booking and management, SMEs will enjoy the same level of service, control, and sustainability foresight as big companies.

Business travel agents that understand the unique needs of SMEs – flexibility, budget sensitivity, speed, and sustainability – will thrive. YTC’s commitment to personal service, cost-conscious solutions, and real-time control puts us perfectly positioned for this shift.

What This Means for YTC and Our Clients

At YTC, our mission remains: to be the best business travel agent by combining intelligent systems with exceptional service.

In 2026, I expect us to deepen our role: not just booking travel, but delivering insightful, sustainable, cost-effective strategies – especially for SMEs. We’ll continue combining automation, data, human expertise and ESG commitment, giving our clients what they truly need: effortless, responsible travel that supports their business goals.

For any business looking to stay ahead in 2026 – whether a large corporation or a growing SME – the message is clear: embrace smarter, sustainable, human-centred corporate travel.
